About Us

Brief History

In the 1960s, Lee's Summit was identified as an ideal site for a general aviation airport. By 1974, the City began exploring the purchase of a small private airport on land owned by Bill McComas. With strong community support, the City acquired the airport in 1977, renaming it McComas—Lee's Summit Municipal Airport (LXT) and initiated improvements.

The airport steadily grew, particularly in 1996, when the City planned to extend the north/south runway from 4,014 to 5,500 feet to attract more corporate traffic. In 2003, the City hired Crawford, Murphy & Tilly (CMT) to help develop a long-term expansion plan in coordination with the FAA. The goal was to make LXT financially self-sufficient, support business aviation in the Kansas City metro and boost regional economic growth.

Airport Master Plan

The Kansas City—Lee's Summit Regional Airport Master Plan is a fresh 20-year vision for the airport and its users. The plan provides a framework to guide future airport development that will cost-effectively satisfy airport demand while considering potential local impacts.
