The Story of Green Street
For years, residents expressed a desire for a vibrant, flexible space that could bring people together year-round in the heart of downtown Lee's Summit. In 2007, the community came together and agreed on a Cultural Arts Master Plan, and in 2012, a Cultural Facilities Master Plan, which set priorities for cultural arts and cultural facilities. The plan included the idea of an open-air festival plaza for entertainment and gatherings, and green space for performances and outdoor activities.
In April 2013, Lee’s Summit voters approved $600,000 as part of a general obligation bond for the creation of a downtown performance and festival space.
Shaped By the Community
Through open houses, surveys and public meetings, residents and stakeholders helped shape the vision for what Green Street could be. Discussions began to consider the potential for a permanent farmers market space to support the growing popularity of the current farmers market operated by Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street. Feedback led to building features such as garage-style doors for indoor/outdoor flow, ample space for vendors, a covered outdoor performance area, and thoughtful design touches that reflect the heart of downtown.
Site studies were conducted to explore possible locations in the downtown district. A site near Southeast Green and Southeast Third streets, across from City Hall, was selected as a prime location for the new outdoor performance and festival space as well as a permanent farmers market facility.
From Concept to Completion
The journey from vision to reality was driven by collaboration between city leaders, planners and downtown stakeholders. In April 2021, City Council named LANE4 Property Group as the master developer of the project and in January 2022, City Council appointed GLMV Architecture as the master architect of the project and began working with project partners and community stakeholders to create the Downtown Market Plaza Master Plan, which guides the development of the project’s public and private components. Construction on the public components began in February 2024 with pad sites for private components to follow.
Green Street is the result of thoughtful planning, community input and a shared commitment to progress. Opening August 15, Green Street is home to the Farmers Market, outdoor performance area, public art, gathering spaces and an immersive playground. From concept to completion, the project reflects a vision shaped by public voices and guided by purposeful design.
Why It Matters
Not just a venue, Green Street is a symbol of what's possible when a city listens, adapts and invests in the future its residents desire. Green Street reflects civic pride, celebrates Lee's Summit and creates new opportunities for connection, commerce and celebration.
