The airport is owned and operated by the City of Lee's Summit.  There are currently two runways: a 4,000 foot x 75 foot runway and a 3,800 foot x 75 foot runway. The airport has 23 buildings and many tiedown spots that house approximately 172 aircraft and is conveniently located in the heart of one of the fastest growing regions of the country located just east of Kansas City.  The goal of the Lee's Summit Municipal Airport is to provide you with fast, friendly service and the best prices in the Kansas City area.

In 1977 the Airport was privately owned and operated airport by Bill McComas.  It had one 2,400 foot by 60 foot runway and five hangar buildings housing 48 aircraft, plus fifty outside tie-downs.

Airport Development and Business Plan

In May 2011, the Lee’s Summit City Council approved authorization of several grants from the Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission to fund the design services for improvements to the primary runway at Lee’s Summit Municipal Airport and the completion of land acquisition.

The improvements to the airport were outlined in the Airport Master Plan developed in 2000 and are described as essential to the City in the Airport Business Plan completed in 2009. The Airport Business Plan was developed to assess the potential to improve the airport’s financial performance, economic development, and operation. Items identified in the plan to increase the profitability of the airport range from extending a runway to attract more corporate aviation clients to improving terminal services and initiating a marketing strategy. The Airport Business Plan was adopted by the City Council in April 2011.

The first phase will be the completion of engineering necessary to begin improvements to runway, 18-36. With additional Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grants, the City anticipates the construction of the runway improvements will begin in 2012.

Additional airport improvements will be performed as approved in the City’s Capital Improvement Plan (CIP).
