Lateral Connection Rehab to Reduce Wastewater Treatment Costs and Increase System Reliability

The City of Lee’s Summit Water Utilities is taking action to reduce wastewater treatment costs and increase sewer system reliability. Lee’s Summit has contracted ACE Pipe Cleaning to perform Lateral Connection Rehab (LCR), in the Cedar Creek Sewer Basin District, areas 16, 17, 14, and 10 (see attached map). LCR is a non-intrusive proLateral Connection Rehab project mapcess that will repair faulty lateral connections to the City sewer main line.

Faulty connections are susceptible to cracks and roots, which causes Inflow and Infiltration (I & I) problems. I & I refers to storm or ground water that enters into the sanitary sewer system through major defects or through cracks, offset joints, or material defects. I & I can cause the sanitary sewer system to become overloaded and can result in sewer backups, sanitary sewer overflows, and increased wastewater treatment costs.

The 2010 Sewer System Evaluation Study, conducted by HDR Engineering and CH2MHill, identified the Cedar Creek Sewer Basin District to have some of the highest levels of I & I in the Lee’s Summit sanitary sewer system. Repairs performed in the Cedar Creek Sewer Basin District are projected to have a significant impact on I & I levels.

Lateral Connection Rehab restores the structural integrity of the pipes at the lateral joint by inserting a liner, coated with a Silicate Resin Mix in the joint between the lateral and the main line. Once cured, the liner restores structural integrity and creates a smooth transition between the lateral and main, which protects against root intrusion, I & I and debris build-up.

ACE Pipe Cleaning will place a door hanger with the expected repair date in the neighborhoods where repair work will be performed. Occupants are advised to pour a pitcher of water in all sinks or floor drains that are not used on a daily basis to minimize the possibility of epoxy type odors from entering the home.

On the day of repair, ACE Pipe Cleaning crews will knock on the door to remind occupants to limit heavy water use, such as washing machines or dishwashers, for a few hours while the repair is taking place. No excavation is required at any point. Lateral lining for businesses that require water to operate, such as restaurants, will be done after business hours. Once lining is complete, residents are free to resume desired water usage.
