Lee’s Summit Recognizes Historic Preservation Achievements

Lee’s Summit Recognizes Historic Preservation Achievements

The Lee’s Summit Historic Preservation Commission is proud to announce the selection of Kathy Hofmann, and John and Kim Carlson for the Graves/Hale Historic Preservation Award. The award is presented annually to individuals or organizations that demonstrate a significant contribution to preserving the history of Lee’s Summit.

John and Kim Carlson were selected for their restoration of 22 SW Third St., which is the historic Ocker & Martin Furniture building in downtown Lee’s Summit. The Carlsons purchased the building in 2019 after the Do Drop Inn closed operations. They restored the façade, reconstructing the exterior to match the original appearance of the building in 1886.

Kathy Hofmann was selected for her tireless efforts to protect the historic homes in downtown Lee’s Summit. Her efforts have contributed to maintaining the historic and architectural character of the city.

The Lee’s Summit Historic Preservation Commission established the Graves/Hale Historic Preservation Award in 2004, named after Lee’s Summit historians Frank Graves and Don Hale. The annual award recognizes those who have demonstrated a commitment to interpreting, retaining and promoting the preservation and adaptive reuse of buildings, districts, structures and cultural landscapes in Lee’s Summit.
