Lee’s Summit Recognized as a Walk Friendly Community

The City of Lee’s Summit is proud to be one of ten cities in the country, and the only city in Missouri, designated as a Walk Friendly Community by the Walk Friendly Communities program. Lee’s Summit received a silver-level designation, which recognizes the City’s dedication to creating a safe and inviting environment for pedestrians. The City will retain the designation through 2025.

The LS360 Strategic Plan initiated the City’s involvement with the Walk Friendly Communities program. In coordination with the City’s Livable Streets Advisory Board, City employees prioritized efforts to make Lee’s Summit a friendlier community for pedestrians and bicyclists through education, enforcement, engineering, planning and policy.

The Walk Friendly Communities program noted Lee’s Summit’s publicly approved transportation sales tax to construct new sidewalks and enhance pedestrian infrastructure; the inclusion of pedestrian connections with interchange projects, such as the Blackwell interchange; the City’s public sidewalk inventory; and the addition of miles of multi-use trails.

Walk Friendly Communities is a national recognition program developed to encourage towns and cities across the United States to establish or recommit to the prioritization of safer walking environments.
