City of Lee’s Summit Recognizes World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Lee’s Summit Mayor Bill Baird will issue a proclamation on Tuesday, June 11, recognizing June 15, 2019, as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. On June 15, the sculpture in front of Lee’s Summit City Hall will be lit up in purple along with the fountains in Howard Station Park in downtown Lee’s Summit.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of adults over the age of 60 are abused, neglected or financially exploited. The City of Lee’s Summit understands the importance of raising awareness about this significant topic and ensuring older adults are treated with respect and dignity.

Anyone who suspects someone is being abused, neglected or exploited can file a report. Missouri’s Elder Abuse and Neglect Hotline can be reached at 1-800-392-0210 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. All reports are confidential. Once a report is filed, the Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services will check on the victim and conduct an investigation.

Abuse and neglect can come in a variety of forms, including physical, emotional and financial. Warning signs to be aware of include trouble sleeping, depression, isolation, unexplained weight loss, signs of trauma, sores, bruises and cuts.

The International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse proclaimed World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in 2006 to recognize the significance of elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue.

More information about elder and disabled abuse awareness can be found on the City’s website, cityofLS.net.
