Lee’s Summit Launches Quality Housing Program

The City of Lee’s Summit is launching a Quality Housing Program, designed to improve the safety and maintenance of all housing in Lee’s Summit. The Quality Housing Program takes a proactive approach to property code compliance through free onsite inspections, outreach and education, and the establishment of a certification program.

To participate, property owners or renters within the City can schedule a free inspection to certify a living unit meets identified standards. An inspection consists of a short visit by a City Neighborhood Services representative to check the interior and exterior of the property for potential hazards and provide suggestions to help the property avoid future maintenance problems. For housing that meets the minimum standards for safety and maintenance, a certificate is provided to the property owner. The certification is good for two years. To assist residents relocating to or within Lee’s Summit, a list of active certified housing will be available on the City’s website.

Through the program, the City will partner with various homeowner associations, community organizations and business groups to help them improve housing in their areas. City employees can attend community meetings hosted by these groups to speak directly to residents about concerns, help educate them about their responsibilities and provide guidance on maintenance issues. The City’s website will act as a central hub for information, providing residents with a checklist for minimum housing standards along with additional resources.

“The Quality Housing Program is an educational opportunity with the purpose of promoting safety and transparency amongst the various housing choices available in the community,” said Ryan Elam, director of Development Services. “The program’s approach allows easy access to information and promotes a minimum standard for everyone.”

For more information or to schedule a free inspection, call 816-969-1200 or email Dan.Harper@cityofLS.net.
