Overlay and Surface Seal Programs Underway in Lee’s Summit

Overlay and Surface Seal Programs Underway in Lee’s Summit

Residents should expect to see road crews throughout Lee’s Summit through Labor Day as the City’s annual overlay and surface seal programs get underway. The Pavement Management Program is designed to extend the life of existing pavement by maintaining and/or restoring road surfaces.

There are 15 areas throughout the city which will receive the surface seal treatment this summer. That treatment uses a mix of aggregate, oil and asphalt binders to seal existing pavement. Major streets, including Rice Road, Third Street and Douglas Street, will be completed at night to minimize impacts to the traveling public. Impacted residents will be mailed a postcard approximately 2 to 3 weeks prior to the work starting in their neighborhood. Door hangers will also be placed 24 to 48 hours before the work will begin on streets. View a complete list and maps of areas in this year’s surface seal program.

There are also 15 areas throughout the city which will be impacted by mill and overlay work this summer. With overlay, the old pavement surface will be removed by milling so when the overlay is applied, the surface of the new pavement will be aligned with the curb. Variable message boards (VMBs) will be placed on major streets to communicate the upcoming work to the traveling public. Residential areas impacted by the work will be mailed a postcard approximately 2 to 3 weeks prior to work starting in their neighborhood. Door hangers will then be placed 24 to 48 hours before the work will begin on streets. All overlay operations are performed to ensure at least one lane of traffic remains open at all times. View a complete list and maps of areas in this year’s overlay program.

Streets included in the City's annual resurfacing projects are carefully evaluated and inspected under the guidelines of the Pavement Management Program. Funding for the Pavement Management Program is made available through the 1/2-cent transportation sales tax.
