Use Fireworks Safely to Prevent Fires and Injuries

Use Fireworks Safely to Prevent Fires and Injuries

Due to the COVID-19 virus, many professional Fourth of July fireworks displays have been cancelled and as an alternative, people have purchased their own fireworks to celebrate the holiday, but If you’re not careful, your backyard celebration can end up with a trip to the hospital for a fireworks-related injury.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), there were an estimated 10,000 reported fireworks-related injuries and 12 deaths in 2019, Sparklers were the number one cause of injuries, accounting for an estimated 900 injuries; 66 percent of the injuries were to males.

The Lee’s Summit Fire Department wants to remind everyone of the risks of handling fireworks, and how to prevent serious injuries and deaths.

Tips to Celebrate Safely

  • Never allow young children to play with, or ignite, fireworks, including sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit—hot enough to melt some metals.
  • Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy, in case of fire or other mishaps.
  • Light fireworks one at a time, then move away quickly.
  • Never try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Soak them with water and throw them away.
  • Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Move to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
  • Never point or throw fireworks (including sparklers) at anyone.
  • After fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding the device to prevent a trash fire.
  • Use only fireworks that are labeled for consumer (not professional) use.
  • Keep pets indoors and check on them frequently.
  • Set off fireworks on your own property in a clear area, away from houses, dry leaves, or grass and other combustible materials.

In the City of Lee's Summit approved fireworks are only allowed to be discharged on July 3, 4, and 5, and only with a 2020 Fireworks Permit. Permits are available at any of the 15 tents in Lee’s Summit or online at cityofLS.net, along with information on fireworks regulations.

Use fireworks responsibly and have a safe and happy Independence Day holiday!
