Battle for Blood - Competing between Blue Springs & Independence!

Lee’s Summit Hosts Blood Drive to Combat Emergency Shortage

Battle for Blood - Competing between Blue Springs & Independence!

It’s a Battle for Blood on May 6, as the City of Lee’s Summit takes part in a friendly competition with Independence and Blue Springs to see which city can finish with the most blood donations, all in an effort to combat an emergency blood shortage in the metro. The City is hosting a blood drive, in partnership with the Community Blood Center, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Howard Conference Room at City Hall. Blue Springs and Independence will host separate blood drives.

The Community Blood Center is in desperate need of all blood types, especially O and B negative blood types. The CBC notes blood donations tend to drop during summer months, which could further strain the already low supply. The City’s goal is to collect 57 units of blood. All community members are encouraged to take part in the blood drive and help Lee’s Summit finish with the most donations to help an important cause. A single pint of blood can save up to three lives.

Donors can register at bit.ly/battle4blood. There are certain requirements to donate blood. Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 115 pounds and be in good overall health. Donors can be 16 years old with written consent from a parent or legal guardian. It is also important to drink plenty of fluids and eat a good meal prior to donating blood.

Walk-in donors are allowed, but it is preferred that donors sign up in advance to prevent long wait times.
