Regulations

The Animal Control Department enforces all animal related ordinances found in Chapter 5 of the Lee's Summit Code of Ordinances

Frequently Enforced Animal Ordinances:

  • Animals At Large - While outside, all dogs and cats must be contained at all times by either fence, leash, or tether.

  • Rabies Vaccinations - All dogs and cats must be properly vaccinated for Rabies by a licensed vet.

  • City License - All dogs and cats must have a current City of Lee's Summit Pet License.

  • Tethering - An animal cannot be tethered for more than 30 minutes at a time and no more than 3 hours in a day. The animal must remain supervised while on a tether. You must provide shelter and water for the animal while it's on a tether.

  • Barking Dogs - Any dog that barks, howls, or whines in an excessive manner can be considered as a public nuisance and should be reported to Animal Control.

  • Chickens - Residents are allowed to keep six hens on their property as long as they are properly contained and no closer than ten feet from the property line or forty feet from the next nearest residence. Chicken pens must remain clean and impervious to predators.

  • Animal Limit - No resident is allowed to have more than three dogs, cats, or combination of dogs or cats over 6 months of age.

  • Livestock - Residents are not allowed to have livestock (pigs, goats, horses, cows, etc.), unless the animals reside more than four hundred feet from the next nearest residence.

  • No breed bans - The City of Lee's Summit does not have any breed specific bans.
