Can't Flush This!

There are so many items that we try to flush down the toilet that really should not be there – medications, wipes, hygiene products, diapers, etc.  Our sanitary sewer systems are not designed for anything other than standard toilet paper and human waste to be flushed. Other items – even those marked “flushable” can clog up a sewer main or lateral before it naturally biodegrades. Overtime, flushing these “foreign” items can result in back-ups or overflows. So before you flush, remember you can’t flush this:

  • Baby wipes
  • Diapers
  • Paper towels
  • Cleaning wipes
  • Cotton balls or swabs
  • Syringes
  • Candy or food wrappers
  • Clothing labels
  • Sponges
  • Toys
  • Any plastic item
  • Aquarium gravel
  • Kitty litter
  • Rubber or latex items
  • Cigarette butts
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Hair
  • Underwear
  • Disposable toilet brushes
  • Medication
  • Bandages

Lee’s Summit Water Utilities is dedicated to continually meeting the needs of our customers and community by providing reliable water and sewer services responsibly and efficiently. Since the adoption of the 2011 Water Utilities Strategic Plan, the department has relied on small, planned rate increases that are aimed to lessen the impact to the customer while meeting infrastructure renewal needs and operational costs. On Jan. 1 2018, a 3 percent rate increase went into effect.

Through these carefully planned incremental increases, the Utility has maintained some of the lowest water and sewer rates in the metropolitan area, while still making strategic investments in our water and sewer infrastructure and services, which have included:

U.S. 50 upsizing:  In 2017 the Department completed a project to upgrade water lines along U.S. 50 highway to meet the projected demands of future growth in the area and increase the level of service for existing customers located in the southeast portion on the Utility’s service area.

Neighborhood Water Main Replacement:  Since 2008, we’ve replaced more than 14 miles of water mains and another 16 miles are scheduled for replacement through 2020. Additionally, 7.5 miles of sewer lines were rehabilitated in 2017 and another 7.5 are scheduled for rehabilitation in 2018. This has reduced costs for maintenance and repair of the aging water infrastructure and diminished the occurrence of unplanned interruptions in water services for our customers due to main breaks in the affected areas.

Meter Replacement Program:  To increase service accuracy and efficiency, Water Utilities has replaced more than 7,000 aged meters since 2014 and in 2017 that program was ramped up, with Utilities staff replacing more than 2,500 meters that had aged out.

Sewer Line Rehabilitation:  Over the last few years, more than 30 miles of sewer lines throughout the City have been rehabilitated to en­sure residents have safe and reliable san­itary sewer. In 2017, the Utility lined 7.5 miles and another 7.5 miles are scheduled for 2018.
