Lee's Summit Water Utilities is dedicated to providing reliable water and sanitary sewer services responsibly and efficiently for the health and safety of our community with exceptional customer service, integrity and pride.

Can't Flush This!

There are so many items that we try to flush down the toilet that really should not be there – medications, wipes, hygiene products, diapers, etc.  Our sanitary sewer systems are not designed for anything other than standard toilet paper and human waste to be flushed. Other items – even those marked “flushable” can clog up a sewer main or lateral before it naturally biodegrades. Overtime, flushing these “foreign” items can result in back-ups or overflows. So before you flush, remember you can’t flush this:

  • Baby wipes
  • Diapers
  • Paper towels
  • Cleaning wipes
  • Cotton balls or swabs
  • Syringes
  • Candy or food wrappers
  • Clothing labels
  • Sponges
  • Toys
  • Any plastic item
  • Aquarium gravel
  • Kitty litter
  • Rubber or latex items
  • Cigarette butts
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Hair
  • Underwear
  • Disposable toilet brushes
  • Medication
  • Bandages

Lee's Summit Water Utilities is making improvements to the water distribution system to meet the projected demands of future growth and to increase the level of service for the existing customers located in the southeast portion of the Utility’s service area.

The City’s contractor on this project, Miles Excavating, will break ground this week on a water line improvement project that will upgrade water lines along U.S. 50 Highway from Blackwell Road to Harris Road.

The lines will be upgraded from an existing 8-inch water main to a 16-inch water main on the north side of U.S. 50 from Blackwell Road to Smart Road and the replacement of the existing 4-inch water main to a 12-inch water main from Smart Road to Harris Road on the south side of U.S. 50.

This project not only increases the volume of water available to all properties located between James A. Reed Wildlife Area and Missouri 7, it will also significantly improve the level of fire protection available through the existing fire hydrants located within the same area.

“The staff of Lee’s Summit Water Utilities is very proud to see this project through to completion. Any time a project results in providing a level of water service to an area that is better than what has ever existed before is exciting for us and good for our customers,” said Mark Schaufler, Director of Lee’s Summit Water Utilities.

“This will be a fantastic improvement to the water and fire protection services in this area,” said Harry McClane, a former member of the board of directors for both the Public Water and Sewer District #14, which previously served water to this area, and the Prairie Township Fire Protection District.

The project is expected to be completed, weather permitting, by December 2017. For more information, visit www.LSwater.net or call 816-969-1900.
