OUR MISSION

Lee's Summit Water Utilities is dedicated to providing reliable water and sanitary sewer services responsibly and efficiently for the health and safety of our community with exceptional customer service, integrity and pride.

Community Sewer Rehabilitation

Did you know there are nearly 500 miles of public sewer mains underneath the City of Lee’s Summit? In addition to inspecting and cleaning these lines every day, Lee’s Summit Water Utilities is currently rehabilitating several miles of sewer lines in most need of repair through a process which essentially installs a pipe within a pipe and is specifically designed for minimal impact and disruption to neighborhoods and customers.

The sewer rehabilitation project reduces blockages caused by roots and debris and the infiltration of groundwater in the public main, which reduces surcharges, overflows and backups.

Our first priority at Lee’s Summit Water Utilities is the safety of customers who drink and use the water we provide.  With recent media reports drawing attention to lead in drinking water, we want to take a moment to provide some information regarding the quality of Lee’s Summit water.

Q
uite simply, Lee’s Summit is ahead of the curve. Our testing results have consistently proven that lead levels in our water are well below detectable levels. The Utility, as part of a program coordinated by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, has targeted customers to collect water samples from their homes. This testing is done on a three year cycle and most recently completed in 2014, 2011, and 2008. The testing looks for detectable levels of lead in the water.  Results are calculated to determine a 90th percentile value and regulations require corrective actions if 10 percent of the samples (the 90th percentile value) exceed 15 parts per billion (ppb). The 90th percentile results for Lee’s Summit for each of the last three test cycles has been 0.0 ppb lead. In other words, of all the samples tested, 90 percent of them were below detection limits. Of the remaining samples, two or three have come back with very low levels of detectable lead and customers who collected these samples are promptly notified of their test results.

Additionally, Lee’s Summit Water Utilities has been taking actions for years when it comes to making sure our infrastructure is lead free. This year, we sent out crews to visually and manually inspect our infrastructure in some of the older areas of town to confirm there were no signs of lead service lines in our system.

Our crews inspected more than 1,400 meter wells in the downtown and midtown area to record the type of water service lines that conveys water from the City’s system to the meter well on the property.  And as expected, 99 percent of the lines inspected were determined to be made from copper and 1 percent was made from galvanized metal. This was due in large part to the Utility’s proactive effort in years past to eliminate lead infrastructure materials from our drinking water system.

For more information on lead or water quality, see the 2016 Water Quality Report or call 816-969-1900.  We don’t want you to have to worry about the quality and the safety of the water we provide. That’s our job.
