Law Enforcement Traffic Safety Award
Master Police Officer Michael Hawkins was recently named the 2008 Law Enforcement Traffic Safety Advisory Council Officer of the Year (LETSAC). Officer Hawkins is an eight year department veteran, currently assigned to the Traffic Unit. Officer Hawkins was nominated by Captain Kevin Reaves for this award, who stated “Officer Hawkins is dedicated to removing impaired drivers and has been a driving force in DWI enforcement in eastern Jackson County.”
Officer Hawkins responsibilities as a member of the Traffic Unit include, traffic enforcement, crash investigations and DWI enforcement. His impressive statistics: last year he made 206 DWI arrests, and 41 minors in possession arrests, investigated 60 motor vehicle crashes, 273 speeding violations, 88 seat belt violations and 1,222 other traffic violations, along with his normal duties. In addition, he is a Type II Instructor, Field Training Officer and often assists in training officers in DWI enforcement strategies.
