Police Explorer Program
The Lee’s Summit Police Department Explorer Post is designed to provide knowledge and training to young people interested in a possible career in law enforcement. Participants will receive classroom and hands on experience to better prepare themselves for the realities of a career in law enforcement. This is also a great way for young people to get involved in their community and to interact with Police Officers.
The 2018 program will kick off on August 23rd, 2017; interested persons should submit an interest card that is located at the bottom of our page.
Requirements
- Be 14-20 years of age
- Completed the 8th grade
- Must be able to pass a criminal background check
- No felony arrests
- No misdemeanor arrests in the last year
- Cannot be on probation or diversion
- No more than 3 moving violations in the last 2 years
- Cannot have a suspended or revoked drivers license
- Must pass a short interview process
- Must have good moral character
- Must have and maintain a 2.0 GPA
- Must complete and turn in the application form
As an explorer, you will participate in drills and work sessions designed to accomplish the following:
- Highlight Job Awareness
- Develop career building skills
- Teach Life Skills
- Promote Citizenship
- Facilitate character development
- Encourage leadership while having fun in a safe environment
Explorers meet during the school year on the first and third Wednesday of every month from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Lee’s Summit Police Department. Lessons and activities will include but not limited to:
- Current events in law enforcement
- Criminal Investigations
- Domestic Violence
- Evidence Collection
- Use of force
- Patrol Tactics
- Firearms safety
- Traffic Control
- Criminal Law
- Traffic Laws
- Traffic stops
- Accident investigation
- Ride-a-longs
