DEPARTMENT K-9 TEAM
Meet Jax and his handler, Officer Scott McMilian. Together they are a team dedicated to providing a specialized police presence in our community. Usually working late evenings and early mornings this duo conducts open area searches, building searches, article searches, provides drug odor recognition and handler protection.
The department’s fifth k-9 team, Jax and Officer McMilian trained together for approximately six weeks, in order to receive their certification. Certifications are renewed annually, contingent on the team successfully completing specific designated tasks. Jax, a dark-coated shepherd, was born in the Czech Republic in December 2008 and is expected to be in service for approximately five to ten years. Jax is trilingual, trained to recognize commands in German, Czech and English. When off-duty Jax lives with the McMilian’s, where he is considered one of the family. Officer McMilian is a twelve year veteran of the police department and has served in many capacities before becoming the newest K-9 officer.
If you happen to see Officer McMilian and his new partner out and about please ask Officer McMilian if it is okay for you to approach Jax. The dog has been socialized but if he is working will be concentrating on the commands he receives from Officer McMilian.
