Fats, oils, and grease (FOG) aren’t just bad for your arteries; they are bad for your sewer lines too. When food scraps are washed down the drain, the fat and grease from the food can build up in your sewer lines, causing raw sewage to back up into homes, businesses, and the environment. The best way to manage FOG is to keep it out of your plumbing. Avoid dumping anything with a fat content, including dairy products, salad dressings, and cooking oils into the kitchen sink or toilet bowl. Try disposing of cooled cooking oil or meat fats in a sealed container in your regular garbage or by wiping off dishes, pots, and pans with a paper towel instead.

For additional tips on how to properly dispose of FOG, visit https://cityofls.net/water-utilities/community-education/sewer-system/fats-oils-and-greases-fogs

Did you know that water and sewer service lines are private property? Service lines or lateral lines that bring water into your home and carry wastewater away can clog, leak or break and typically it is the property owner’s responsibility for repairs. Damages from a sewer lateral line blockage or water service line may be covered separately from a typical homeowner’s insurance policy. Just because someone carries homeowners insurance doesn’t mean it will cover the repair work necessary to fix the pipes. Some homeowner’s insurance policies may cover the damage the water or sewage caused to the property but may not cover the cost of repairs to the service line or lateral. Check with your insurance agent about your coverage.

Did you know flushing items not intended for our sanitary sewer system could result in blockages or even back-ups in your home, business, or neighborhood? Even though wipes and other hygiene products may say “flushable” on the packaging, it’s best to keep them out of our sewer system. These products can quickly clog your plumbing or the City’s sewer system. For more information on what to flush and what not to flush, visit https://cityofls.net/water-utilities/community-education/sewer-system/cant-flush-this.

As temperatures continue to decrease, it's important to disconnect and drain your outdoor hoses. Disconnecting your hoses from outdoor faucets allows the water to drain from the pipe so an overnight freeze doesn't burst the faucet or the pipe it's connected to. Go to https://cityofls.net/water-utilities/community-education/water-s ystem/winterization for more tips to prepare your pipes for winter weather.

When landscaping, make sure you do not cover water meters or sewer manhole lids. Meter readers must be able to access your meter well in order to properly read your water usage. Sewer manholes provide an access point to the sewer system during routine maintenance and emergency situations. While it is OK to lightly landscape near these manholes and meter wells, they should never be covered or have obstructions around them such as rocks, other tripping hazards, or large trees/shrubs.

When outdoor temperatures drop below freezing (32°Fahrenheit) and especially if temperatures fall below zero, you may need to take precautions to protect your water meter and the water pipes inside your home from freezing. Have you noticed a difference in the taste & odor of your tap water? KC Water has advised LS Water Utilities that low water levels in the Missouri River have caused KC Water to adjust their water treatment process, which can affect the taste & odor of tap water. This condition is likely to continue until water levels rise in the Missouri River & prior treatment processes can resume.

This does NOT affect the water quality & safety. The water meets or exceeds all state & federal drinking water safety requirements. Both KC Water & LS Water Utilities perform continuous monitoring & extensive laboratory testing of drinking water to ensure its safety & quality.

To reduce the impact on customers, LS Water Utilities is maximizing the amount of water supplied from Independence up to the full amount allowed by contract. However, due to demand, water supply from KC Water cannot be completely eliminated. For more information please visit www.kcwater.us/education/water-quality.

To prevent many sewer line blockages, never pour fats, oils or grease down the drain. These materials harden and block your sewage lines, causing costly plumbing repairs to your private lines. Fats, oils, and grease also create problems for your neighbors when the blockages occur in the City’s lines.

November 2019

When food scraps are washed down the drain, the fat and grease from the food can build up in your sewer lines, causing raw sewage to back up into homes, businesses, and the environment.  Anything with a fat content, including dairy products, salad dressings, and cooking oils, can contribute to grease-clogged pipes.

Lee’s Summit Water Utilities services 6,000 fire hydrants each year. Hydrant testing is an essential part of ensuring that water will be available whenever an emergency occurs. It is crucial for planning ahead and preparing for an emergency.

Regularly maintained hydrants also affect the rating the fire department and the community receives from the ISO. Communities with better equipped hydrants & available water supply benefit from a lower ISO rating and lower homeowner insurance rates.

Knowing where your master water shut off valve is and exercising it regularly could prevent a household disaster and save you thousands of dollars in water damage repairs if a water pipe springs a leak.

This valve is usually located where the water line enters your house or near the water heater or washing machine.  The master shut off valve turns off the water to the house.

Paint it a bright color and make sure everyone in the household knows where it is in case of an emergency.

Cooking grease sticks to the insides of sewer pipes and can build up over time to cause blockages in pipes on your property or down the street, resulting in raw sewage overflowing in your home, the house next door, parks, yards or City streets. This means expensive clean-up costs for the home or business owners and increased maintenance costs for Lee’s Summit Water Utilities. Help prevent sewer overflows by never pouring fats, oils or grease down the drain or into toilets.

May is Bike and Walk Month.  Enjoy nationally recognized Bike and Walk Friendly Lee’s Summit.  For more information visit www.Livablestreetsls.com.

March 2013
The City of Lee’s Summit requires all in-ground lawn sprinkler systems to be protected by a backflow assembly that is tested annually before using the system to protect the public water supply. Test notices will soon be sent as an additional reminder. Questions can be directed to the Backflow Prevention Coordinator at 816.969.1930.

Never pour grease or cooking oil down the drain. Grease should be poured into a heat-resistant container and after it cools, disposed of in the garbage. Even if grease is washed down with hot water, it still cools and solidifies in your drain, your sewer line, or the City’s main sewer line. This will eventually clog the line and could lead to costly sewer back-ups in your home.

February 2013
Homeowners and property owners are responsible for the maintenance of their private sewer lateral lines – the sewer line running from the home to the main sewer line – and should be aware that there is always some risk of a backup. To mitigate the financial risk if a backup were to occur, contact your insurance provider and speak to them about sewer lateral insurance.

If you utilize your bank’s online payment program to pay your water bill, please verify your bank has the 13-digit online account number located on the remittance portion of your monthly water bill.

Lee’s Summit Water Utilities is currently replacing several miles of sewer line throughout the City. Each year the City targets portions of the City’s sewer system in the most need for repair and replaces the line by simply inserting a new pipeline through the old line.

It is important to insulate any pipes and faucets located in the unheated areas of your home – like an unfinished basement, garage or crawl space. Pipe wrapping materials and supplies can be found at many hardware stores. Click here for more information.

Knowing where your master water shut off valve is and exercising it regularly could prevent a household disaster and save you thousands of dollars in water damage repairs if a water pipe springs a leak. This valve is usually located where the water line enters your house or near the water heater or washing machine. The master shut off valve turns off the water to the entire house. Paint it a bright color and make sure everyone in the household knows where it is in case of an emergency.

When using a water hose, never submerge the end of the hose and never use a hose with a chemical spray attachment without having a backflow prevention device in place first.  All sill cocks, hose bibs, wall hydrants and other openings with a threaded hose connection should have atmospheric or pressure type vacuum breakers for backflow protection.  Many will have this built in.  For those that do not, an inexpensive screw-on hose connection vacuum breaker can be obtained at your local hardware store.  For more information, please visit lswater.net or call 816.969.1930.
