Change Your Clock And ReplaceThe Batteries In Your Smoke Alarms

The Lee’s Summit Fire Department wants to remind everyone when they change their clock on Sunday, November 5th, to change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detector.

In the United States, eighty one percent of fire deaths happened in homes. The majority in homes without smoke alarms, or had smoke alarms that didn’t work due to dead or missing batteries. That is why it is so important to take time each year to check your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Having a properly installed smoke alarm on every level of the home, outside of sleeping rooms and in each bedroom, can reduce your risk of dying in a fire in half by providing early warning and critical seconds to escape, but only if they work.

Don’t wait for the low battery alarm to go off before changing the battery. Most people are not prepared to replace the battery when the low battery alarm sounds and will disconnect it - leaving them and their family needlessly unprotected.

In addition to changing batteries, replace smoke alarms that are more than ten years old, test them monthly, and have an escape plan!

Take the hour gained by the time change and talk about fire safety and emergency planning with your family.
