Tractor-Trailer Fire Shuts Down I-470

LEE'S SUMMIT, MO--On Tuesday, July 18, 2017, at 12:40 p.m. the Lee's Summit Fire Department responded to a reported commercial vehicle fire on eastbound I-470 at Pryor Road. Multiple callers reported the cab of a tractor-trailer well involved in fire. One caller reported the vehicle was smoking as it went down I-470, before pulling off to the median.

When fire department units arrived, the cab of the vehicle was well involved in fire. The occupants of the vehicle were safe outside of the vehicle. The trailer of the vehicle was reported to be empty.

Firefighters contained the fire to the cab. Due to the lack of hydrants in the immediate area, mutual aid tankers from Prairie Township Fire Protection District and Central Jackson County Fire Protection District were called to bring additional water to the scene. The fire was under control by 1:20 p.m.

Crews remained on scene to overhaul hot spots and contain the remaining diesel fuel on the vehicle. Fire crews were working with law enforcement to get the highway open as quickly as possible.

The exact cause of the fire has not been determined; it is likely due to a mechanical failure on the vehicle.
