Fire Causes Damage to Lee’s Summit Home

On Thursday, December 1, 2016, at 1211 hours, the Lee’s Summit Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 2517 SE 11th Street. The owner of the house reported to 911 operators that there was smoke in the residence with the smoke alarms sounding and flames visible on the exterior of the house. The caller also stated that the residence was being evacuated.

Lee’s Summit Voters Approve a $14.5 Million No-Tax Increase Bond Initiative for Public Safety Improvements

The City of Lee’s Summit’s history of overwhelming support for ballot issues continued on Tuesday, November 8, with the approval of a $14.5 million no-tax increase bond election that will fund replacing the current Fire Station No. 3, replacing older air packs for fire personnel, upgrading the radio system for public safety and improving network capability at City-owned buildings and facilities. Lee’s Summit has not had a failed City-initiated no-tax increase ballot question since 1995.

City of Lee’s Summit Approves MOU with John Knox Village for land to locate a new Fire Station No. 3

At its Nov. 3 meeting, the Lee’s Summit City Council approved a Memorandum of Understanding by and between the City and John Knox Village for the terms and conditions associated with the potential transfer of property located on NW Pryor Road for use as a new Fire Station No. 3.

This is a 2.28-acre plot of undeveloped land on the west side of Pryor Road.

City Committee to Discuss Possible Funding Sources for Additional Ambulance Resources

During their Jan. 4 meeting, the City’s Finance & Budget Committee approved future discussion of potential funding sources and costs associated with additional ambulance resources for the community. City of Lee’s Summit Begins Clean-up Following Damaging Storms on July 1

The City of Lee’s Summit is currently assessing damage from several storms that passed through the area including a tornado that touched down momentarily in the area of NE Douglas Street between NE Victoria Drive, and NE Tudor Road, and a second funnel that was reported later in the evening at M-150 Highway and Ward Road. In addition to tornados and damaging wind, flash flooding closed some roads and damaged some structures in the southern portion of the City. As the storms left the area, the number of storm damage reports and requests for service diminished and the City’s Emergency Operations Center closed.

At approximately 6:25 p.m., a funnel cloud was reported in the area of Unity Village moving southeast through the center of the city. The City activated all weather sirens ad advised citizens to take cover.

Statewide Tornado Drill Rescheduled for March 6th

The original date for the drill on March 4th had to be delayed due to the weather and a delay in FCC approval for the drill.

With all the winter weather it’s difficult to think about severe weather being a possibility in the next few days or weeks, but we do live in Missouri and extreme changes in the weather this time of year is normal - so be prepared. Severe Weather Awareness Week is set for March 3rd through March 7th. This campaign is intended to increase public awareness about severe weather and tornadoes.

The Lee’s Summit Fire Department in conjunction with the State Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill, will conduct a statewide tornado drill on Thursday, March 6th at 1:30 p.m. Locally the Lee’s Summit Fire Department will activate the outdoor storm warning sirens, announce the exercise over the Emergency Broadcast Radio System, and send a message to Nixle.com subscribers. The National Weather Service will also activate the NOAA All-Hazards Weather Radio, and the Emergency Alert System (EAS).
