Preparations Underway for Google Fiber to come to Lee’s Summit

Preparatory utility work began in mid-August, and installation of the Google Fiber network along major roadways should begin early this fall and in residential areas later this fall. A timeline for Google Fiber residential service availability is not yet available, but it is expected to start sometime in 2015.

Once the installation of the fiber network begins, residents can expect to see Google subcontractors working within the City’s right-of-way and utility easements. As is typical with underground utility work of this scale, digging could be required in your area. Residents should receive door-hangers from Google Fiber prior to construction activity beginning in their neighborhoods. Click the read more for FAQ's and important contact numbers.

Internet-based services and products developer Google Inc. is exploring new ways to deliver Internet better and more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today.

Fill out the Google Fiber Optic Trial - Resident's Survey Now!

Imagine sitting in a rural health clinic, streaming three-dimensional medical imaging over the Web and discussing a unique condition with a specialist in New York. Or, imagine downloading a high-definition, full-length, feature film in less than five minutes. According to Google these are a few examples of what would be possible with universal, ultra high-speed Internet access.

Google™ is planning to build and test ultra, high-speed broadband networks in one or more trial locations across the country to experiment with ways to improve Internet access.  The service will be offered at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people.

The City of Lee’s Summit has an opportunity to help with this innovative process by becoming one of the trial communities. Lee’s Summit’s inclusion in this program is a natural fit for our community.  In 2008 and 2009, Lee’s Summit was recognized as one of the top ten Digital Cities Survey winners in the United States for the use of technology to better engage citizens in local government. Many of our community’s digital advances include the new and improved Web site, a presence on Facebook and Twitter, downtown Wi-Fi, electronic newsletters, and expanded services to the government access channel. Our inclusion in this program would be another opportunity to improve the City’s technological and communications capabilities.

In order for Lee’s Summit to be considered for participation by Google™, the City must fill out the local government Request for Information (RFI) form. This form contains questions about general City information, as well as our community’s level of support for this project.

An important part of this process is the feedback of citizen and community groups. As a convenience, the City will forward your information to Google™.  The residents and community groups form is simple and requires the following: name, city, state, Internet information, and your response to why Google™ should build a fiber-to-home network in Lee’s Summit.  Additional information, such as the speed of your current Internet service is requested, but optional to complete.
