On Tues., March 29, the City received the Military Order of the Purple Heart Special Recognition plaque for dedication and support honoring America’s combat wounded veterans from the Patriot Members of the Department of Missouri Military Order of the Purple Heart, USA. Upon receiving this prestigious award, Lee’s Summit is now among 107 cities designated as a “Purple Heart City.”
Mayor Pro Tempore and Councilmember Diane Forte accepted the award, on behalf of the City, which was presented during the ceremony in front of Lee’s Summit City Hall on Tuesday morning (March 29) honoring Vietnam War Veterans by the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
In recognition of the significance of March 29 in our country’s history, there was a flag raising and a “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day” proclamation read by Mayor Pro Tempore and Councilmember Forte. On March 29,1973, the last United States troops left South Vietnam, ending America’s direct military involvement in the Vietnam War.
