Lee’s Summit Airport Runway Improvements Project Wins Transportation Project of the Year Award

The Lee’s Summit Airport Runway Improvements project was announced as a Public Works Transportation Project of the Year by the Kansas City Metro Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) at a luncheon on May 23, at the DoubleTree Hotel in Overland Park. The $18 million project won in the transportation category for projects more than $5 million but less than $25 million. The entire project team, including the City of Lee’s Summit Public Works Department, engineering design consultant Crawford Murphy & Tilly, Inc., and contractor Emery Sapp & Sons, was recognized for the award.

City of Lee’s Summit Asks for Public Input on Fair Housing

The City of Lee’s Summit will be conducting a public survey from May 15 through June 30 to help the City better understand the issues related to housing, housing choice and overall quality of life of its citizens, particularly those of low-to-moderate income and of protected class, in order to draft future goals and policies to address identified impediments to fair housing choice. Residents, developers/builders and mortgage lenders are all invited to share their experiences. All survey responses are anonymous.

U.S. Highway 50/Route 291 Interchange Opens

The City of Lee’s Summit and its project partners celebrated the official opening of a new $16 million interchange at U.S. 50 and Route 291 South with a ceremonial ribbon cutting on Friday, May 11. The project reconstructed the 40-year-old Route 291 overpass into a diverging diamond design, added a roundabout at Blue Parkway and Jefferson Street, and realigned Oldham Parkway.

Lee’s Summit Designated “SolSmart Gold” for Advancing Solar Energy Growth

The City of Lee’s Summit received national recognition with a SolSmart Gold designation on April 30 for the steps it has taken to make it faster, easier, and more affordable for homes and businesses to go solar.

Lee’s Summit is the 200th government nationwide to be recognized by the Solsmart program and joins cities in 35 states that have taken actions to encourage solar energy growth and remove obstacles to solar development. For companies looking to expand, a SolSmart Gold designation is a signal that Lee’s Summit is “open for solar business.”
