Election Process
April 6, 2010 Candidates - Current Term Limits - State of Missouri - Charter - Jackson County - Cass County
Elections for Municipal Officials serving the City of Lee’s Summit are held in even-numbered years. Terms for all elected officials are four years in length. With an eight-member Council, terms for half the Council and one municipal judge will expire every even-numbered year. The position of Mayor is also a four-year term. In 2007, voters passed amendments to the Charter, one of which imposed term limits for the Council and for the Mayor. No councilmember or mayor may serve more than two consecutive terms. There were no term limits for municipal judges.
Each year, the State of Missouri issues a calendar outlining election dates in February, April, June, August and November.
- Municipal elections are held the first Tuesday of the first full week in April.
- Potential candidates can begin filing with the City Clerk at 8:00 a.m. on the 16th Tuesday prior to the election (around the middle of December). No filings can be accepted before 8:00 a.m. on that date or collected after the 11th Tuesday prior to the election (around the end of January).
- Filing for office consists of filling out and signing a document affirming that the candidate meets all qualifications established by Charter.
- The City Clerk provides candidates with information pertinent to the election, including forms required by the State.
NOTE: The last day for voter registration on any election is the 4th Wednesday prior to the election.
