Do Not Be Alarmed by an Incorrect City or Zip Code on Census

If you notice an incorrect city name or zip code listed on your advance letter or Census form, please do not be alarmed.

Residents were asked originally to mark through incorrect city and zip code information and to replace it with the correct information. If you did this, the form will be checked manually and counted. However, you DO NOT NEED TO CORRECT CITY AND ZIP CODE information on the census.

The City has been receiving phone calls and e-mails from residents about incorrect information on census forms, particularly those distributed to Lee’s Summit households in the 64064 zip code and the residents of the Kensington Farms subdivision. The forms sent to households in the 64064 zip code and in the Kensington Farms subdivision have Blue Springs and Raymore listed as the city on the forms, respectively, instead of Lee’s Summit.
According to a March 16 blog, titled, “Is The Address on Your Form Not What You Expected?” from Census Bureau Director Robert M. Groves, the address differences were made in order to streamline the sorting and delivering of forms by the U.S. Postal Service. These changes, however, will NOT effect which city, town or block your household’s responses will be assigned to when census results are tabulated.

Groves states in the blog, “The actual location of your address has been verified for accuracy. The 20-digit identification number on your form links back to the Census’s master address and geographic files where information about the correct geographic location of your housing unit is stored. This geographic information was verified last year by census workers who physically located each housing unit on the ground and assigned the housing units a “geocode” using special census maps and GPS coordinates.”

Groves further states, “If the address on the form is completely wrong, it must have been delivered to you by mistake. Please destroy this form.” To obtain a new census form, go to a “Be Counted” site. The “Be Counted” site in Lee’s Summit is located at the Mid-Continent Public Library, 150 N.W. Oldham Pkwy.
