World Trade Center Artifact Arrives!

The City of Lee’s Summit received shipment of a World Trade Center artifact. The artifact is a structural steel “I-beam” used for building support which was removed from a larger portion of a steel beam.  The piece measures 36 inches long, 13 inches wide and weighs approximately 145 lbs.

“It is a great honor for our community to be a recipient of such an emotionally moving artifact,” said Lee’s Summit Mayor Randy Rhoads. “When you look at this piece of steel, you begin to realize the magnitude of September 11 both physically and emotionally.’ ‘We appreciate the opportunity provided to us by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the City of New York to be caretakers of this important symbol.”

The artifact will soon be displayed at Lee’s Summit City Hall, 220 SE Green St.  Visitors will also be able to view the artifact during the Ten Year Memorial Ceremony for September 11.  The memorial ceremony will be held on September 11 at City Hall from 7 to 7:30 p.m.
