Snow Removal Crews are 83 Percent Complete with Residential Streets

City crews have been working around-the-clock to plow streets throughout the community after one of the worst winter storms in recent years hit the metropolitan area.
Some parts of our community reported close to 11 inches of snow by the time the snow ended early Wednesday morning.

“This is probably one of the worst snow events I’ve seen in our area in quite a while, particularly because of the significant snowfall and the blowing and drifting snow produced by winds up to 45 miles per hour.’ ‘Blizzards are one of the most difficult storms for snow removal efforts because you have to repeatedly plow the same streets until the wind subsides and the pavement is passable,” said City of Lee’s Summit Public Works Department Deputy Director Bob Hartnett.

“Our crews will continue plowing and treating streets until the job is complete,” Hartnett said.
All residential streets have at least one lane plowed. By 11:30 a.m. Thursday (today), 83 percent of residential streets were plowed. Remaining streets will be plowed by 5 p.m. today (Thursday).>
Crews will treat streets tonight with rock salt to help melt snow. Residents should not expect the treatment to result in bare pavement due to extremely cold temperatures.

Residents are asked not to park vehicles on streets so snow removal crews are able to plow and treat streets. As a result of the significant amount of snowfall in our City, large windrows will be left in front of driveways and at some intersections as streets are plowed. Residents are reminded not to shovel or push snow onto streets.

The Snow Desk, (816) 969-1870, will be staffed throughout the snow removal operation. Residents can receive updates about the City’s snow removal efforts by e-mail, cell phone text message and Web by signing up at www.Nixle.com. Nixle is a FREE service.
