July 2012: The City of Lee’s Summit received the 2012 MWITE (Mid-Western Institute of Transportation Engineers) Transportation Achievement - Safety Award for its School Traffic Safety Study Program. This cyclical and proactive program was developed by Public Works to improve traffic conditions for vehicular, pedestrian, bicycle, and bus traffic around school areas. All 22 elementary and middle schools, including private K-8 institutions and schools from the highly acclaimed Lee’s Summit and Blue Springs School Districts within the City Limits were studied over the last four years. Nearly all study recommendations have been implemented for more efficient traffic circulation around schools and safer routes to and from school for walkers and cyclists. For more information on this program and individual studies (with maps of preferred routes to and from school for walking/biking), please contact Michael Park, City Traffic Engineer at 969-1800, or visit: http://cityofls.net/Public-Works/Traffic-Transit/General-Information.aspx
